I love video. And thrilled Substack has made it so much simpler for us to share. But It can be scary, overstimulating, and loud. But it can be a wonderfully gentle means of self-expression, sharing stories and make deeper connections, without feeling pressured to show your face if you're not inclined to.

Yesterday, I wrapped up a five day art challenge using daily videos and it was a great experience both for me and fellow creatives. Since I began posting here, I've been exploring various strategies of sharing video on this platform, and there's a real ease in editing and sharing videos again. It feels like the early days when I would upload a raw video on facebook without editing or great sound, and still get a lot views. I am not getting significant views here, but I would never dare to share such unedited video without sound on instagram or any other platform than Substack.

You can say, I have so much to say about video, hahaha. It’s easier for me to do a video than to write a post. I guess that comes from my background and expertise in video production and video coaching —I could chatter endlessly about the highs and lows of video.

But quite honestly, I’m tired of the fast pace of reels just to grab three seconds of your attention. So video on Substack feels like a reenergising surge of creative energy, reigniting my passion for making videos again. So I'm inspired to exploring ways to help fellow artists and creatives embrace the power of video, crafting it into a beautiful art tool that aligns with their personal brand🌼🌷

I'd love that! I can get really geeky about video, but I'm also very sensitive to the noise. Just let me know x

Ive been using video in my posts for a little over a month ish ... I have really enjoyed it, mine are just a few minutes and I've used it primarily to talk about books/reading ... I've now decided to dedicate one post a month to books/reading (Book Lovers Chat 📚) so it has it's own space to develop and that's where I see my videos sitting (rather than in my Slow Sunday Letters 💌 which are framed around Slow and Gentle Living)

I'm extremely new to video and have no skills whatsoever lol (I'm a point and shoot in one take!) but I'm looking forward to learning and developing more. It's been a great way to feel more connected to my subscribers. I've kept it spontaneous and organic when I actually film so I don't get too in my head or nervous about it.

Ahh lovely! My husband has two brilliant cameras but I’ve never even dared pick them up. 😆

Great to hear that you're keeping your videos spontaneous and organic, as that can be quite challenging for many. I love the sound of your video, will check it out!

Thank you Susan! I've found the few times I've tried to 'plan' what to say too much or tried too hard, I just can't get it, so I almost surprise myself with it 🤣 ... Like 'let's film the video right now!' the less I overthink the better !

I'm happily uploading audio -- and now you're adding video (*gulp*)? 🫠🙃

We don’t have to… but my month of June is an invitation… simply because we are already here first before the rest of the internet - we mayaswell give it a go?

I’m going to start off slow with video, I’m filming a “peak into the community garden” short today. Let’s see how it goes!

Oh brilliant! Will head over! I got some slow no footage in LONDON to do a similar thing! I think with this as we are just trying it out it will be worth inviting people in and asking them what we want of them?

Yes agreed! I think I may pose that question in the note tomorrow, seems like a good plan!

I am little obsessed with drawing flowers and checking out other people's photos of flowers at the moment, so this sounds like a lovely idea for a video. Let us know when you post it!

Oh lovely. Did it feel ok Annalisa?

Expand full comment

Yeah, quite ok, I used to film me and did some YouTube videos in the past too. It was nice to do it again, without bothering too much about editing and appearance, as it is “normally” online 😌

The Buggles song is one of my favourites and now it's in my head in loop 🤣

I'm not sure I would personally do video (never say never) but I have found in the last year or two as more people have recorded and made video available for podcasts I have enjoyed and got more out of watching the video version as I can see expressions, gestures and it can add context without explanation. I feel like there is a place for video with some things and for accessibility too it can be super helpful and inclusive. I think there's a place for all mediums, and we have to hope that unlike how insta has worked against static posts with the push of reels, none of the algos here, get swayed or pushed to favour those who choose to use video vs those who don't etc. same with audio really.

I used video for a free workshop/training on boundaries last month. I love how easy it is to share various formats in one space! I had the idea to host a workshop, and I didn’t have to piece together a bunch of tech to roll it out. The whole process was easy and smooth.

I’m enjoying some of the video features, like the automatic transcript, clicking anywhere in the transcript to play the video, creating video clips, etc. I like that my Substack feels like a complete space where I can write, podcast if I choose to and quickly develop training or other videos when I feel inspired.

A complete space YES I love that Alyssa! Did you set some of it infront of a paywall?

Expand full comment

I’ve only done one video so far and made it free for all as a preview of the type of resources I’ll be sharing with members. But I do plan to paywall coaching exercises!

I've just started my business Substack but do anticipate adding YouTube videos to my posts eventually. For my other Substack @nearlyme by @ellymarie (why is the @ link not working in comments for me?) which has been going since last year, I already added voiceovers to some of my posts as I know some people find it easier to listen rather than read. I want to make my work accessible. I do not want to use video in notes though as it is distracting at best and extremely annoying at worst.
