"If you’re new to Substack and you’ll feeling overwhelmed or stuck..." Ha, yes. Hello! My name is Lou and I'm overwhelmed and maybe a little disheartened!

I *love* substack and the spaces I'm in. I love writing in the platform and I love that I've got my first 7 subscribers and my first like on a post. I love that I've published 2 posts in my first two weeks and have got another one scheduled to go out. I've learned so much in such a short time.

But I'm also like, whoa.... What have I started?!?

In terms of sharing another substack, the best one for this week and this topic seems to me to be Letters from Love from Liz Gilbert. What a week to try writing your own love letter to yourself! https://elizabethgilbert.substack.com/how

I've just had a quick look at your page... It's great! Stick with it! Oh my God, "Lou Reads"... That is the best thing I've seen on the internet today. 😊. And Liz Gilbert! Yes! I just started writing here in September so I feel like a bit of a newbie too... It's a lovely place to be.

Ah Michelle, thank you so much for this boost! Such a gorgeous message to receive. I think the next Lou Reads will be on Dave Gray's book Liminal Thinking, or Pam Slim's Body of Work.

And yes - it is a lovely place to be! I'm feeling very seen and supported. Takeaway for today: Stick with it. Just keep going.

Yes, absolutely. Just keep going. That's all any of us can do. And we're all doing it together 🤩👏

My recommendation would be Sober Soulful by Dana Leigh Lyons. Dana has created a generous and safe community offering for those in recovery. Her writing is honest and it always hits a special place in my heart as someone who has also struggled with addiction.

OMG there are so so many writers that I love and adore here on Substack that it's hard for me to pick just one!!!

Can I name a few of my most favorites? Sam Baker (her podcast 'The Shift' is bold and powerful), Laurie Stone, Amanda Saint, Jen Glantz, Mari Andrew (hoping to book a writing retreat in Wyoming this summer with her group), Christene Barberich, Tara Schuster (formally of Comedy Central), Fiona Gibson (hilarious!), Sari Botton, Lindsay Johnson, Maggie Smith, Katherine May, Andrea Gibson (her poetry is breathtaking) and of course the one who started this all for me, the one person who I found Substack through, Mr.Ted Gioia.

He writes extensively about music history and how the musical landscape has changed. He also highlights various artists, especially the jazz greats and other genres that I love. I created many cherished playlists from his posts.

There are so many stunning writers on Substack, all with their own magic to offer. And I know that what I've listed above doesn't even scratch the surface.

I love discovering new voices and finding messages that really resonate with me. From music and self love to honoring women over 40 (me!) and celebrating their greatness, it's all here!! So dig in xx

Also, I am going to be a rebel in the name of community building and recommend my own Motherhood Minute publication because right now I’m releasing amazing conversations with women on what building community looks like. So please follow all of them!

Here’s a line from a fav post, “When we attune our energies with the seasons, we rest and reflect in the winter. We accelerate our projects and bloom in the spring. We share our work and celebrate with others in the summer. We reap the harvest and stockpile our creative space in the fall. Winter doesn’t end with the holidays.”
