Your work is brilliant, would love for you to weigh in on any tips you might have about collaborating on Substack either tips for illustrators or even writers
Of course! One is to leverage opportunities on Notes—that’s how Anne found me! And to writers, I would pull examples from the illustrators’ portfolio to pinpoint what style you’d like the artwork to be. Lastly, illustrators should make sure to account for number of included revisions and fees for any extra rounds of revisions in a contract.
This is brilliant, so useful and informative. It is something I haven’t actively thought about though I feel like it is something I subconsciously would love to collaborate on (illustration for my writing) but wouldn’t have known where to start, thank you for this Claire and Adam xx
Thanks for the mention Claire and Adam 💛 For anyone interested I’ve been offering some of my artwork and decorative illustration assets in my mini illustration market for creatives since April, with options for both free & paid subscribers. I’m adding some more illustrations today, in fact 🍁. I LOVE the illustrations I drew for you and Laura on Company of Two Claire, it’s so lovely to see my work around Substack and so nice to see so many fellow illustrators here too! It’s fab to see writers and illustrators collaborating here. Any writers looking for illustrations to add a little beauty to their stack make sure you come say hi. https://open.substack.com/pub/whileiwasdrawing/p/a-mini-illustration-market-for-creatives?r=1l11kb&utm_medium=ios&utm_campaign=post
Thank you for this session Claire, this was so generous of you and Adam, and especially generous to come on the call straight after receiving the news about your funding bid ❤️ Rejection is so tough but you're right, it get a little bit easier each time. Well done on pushing through and showing up!
I found the discussion so useful and I can see great potential for magical, creative collaborations!
Fascinating read and lovely to see the creative community doing what it does best, lifting each other up. You just know some incredible partnerships are going to come from this! 😊
Gutted I missed this, really need to catch up on it (booked myself out this week). I long since wanted a one off illustrator to draw my inner child sat on a bench without a scrap of self worth. Also the scrap heap of chronic illness warriors I see in my minds eye, one standing and all joining out to reach hands and help others up.
I reached out to a writer/illustrator friend and we're going to do a project.... so excited, thanks for the inspiration everyone!
Ooo this sounds exciting!! Will you tell us more when you can?
I don't know when I can, but surely! It's a dream project and really was inspired by oru chat, i hope many more happen!
Me too!! 💜💬💜
Such a lovely post on writer + illustrator collaborations on Substack! I had the pleasure of doing two commissions so far for Cafe Anne (more on that here https://cyoo.substack.com/p/making-an-editorial-illustration), and another favorite collab of mine is Bekka Palmer's logo for Anne Helen Petersen's Garden Study (post on that here https://bekka.substack.com/p/garden-study-gets-a-new-banner)

I hope you think of what kinds of illustrations would work for you, and share it in the writers’s matchmaking portion of this post!
Thank you Adam, I will definitely be dreaming up some ideas to put in the matchmaking section, thanks for this suggestion!
Aw so happy to hear it Lyndsay - the sky is the limit and maybe something beautiful emerges for you in terms of ideas...
