Hi Claire. I’m Sally Wessely from Colorado Springs, Colorado. I’m the wife of Jim, and mom to four living adult children, and eight grandchildren, all of whom are adults except for one who is six years old. (He was a big surprise to his mom and dad!) I am a retired English teacher who started blogging when I first retired about fifteen years ago. The blog never really was a place I spent much time until my youngest daughter died in 2010. Writing then became a way I processed my deep grief. I started my Substack, Strand of Silver, this past spring. I’m excited to be here on Substack. Thank you for all of the tips, tricks, and insights you share with us.
Thanks for being here Sally. And for sharing your story. I popped over to read your piece and I am so sorry to read about your daughter. My husband lost a yoga student (and friend) to suicide and his dad took his life a few weeks later...We both wish they final conversations before Christmas break had played out differently! I’m so glad you have Substack as a place to share your words - it’s such a spacious place to write. ✨🙏
Thank you so much for your kind words. Also, thank you for reading my post. It is a difficult topic to write on, and to read. I’m so very sorry to read of the double tragedy your husband suffered in losing his friend and then the shock of losing his friend’s dad too. Heartbreaking. So, so heartbreaking. Sending comfort to all who were touched by these two deaths. There is always a ripple effect, sadly.
Hi Sally, I have also found great solace in writing since my 20 year old son died in a road crash almost 16 years ago and it's partly what brought me here. Good to connect with you. :o)
Hi Sally, I’m Brenda. I’m retired also and mom to 2 living adult children. It’s wrenching to write that. We lost our youngest daughter 6 years ago. I just wanted to reach out and send you a virtual hug, from one mom to another. ❤️
Hello Claire and everyone. Nice to meet you. How gracious of you to offer this. I am Charlene. I live in Tequesta Florida (near Palm Beach). I am a mom to a son and a daughter (both in their 20’s) and a rescue lab mix, Harley. I am single now for a long while, but have found contentment with that. I have been on Substack for a few months now and feel so welcomed and encouraged here. Here is a bit more about me and I’m looking forward to meeting everyone and learning about this community.
Ahh I’m so glad you feel welcome Charlene!! It’s really such a great space to share your words! Florida! A world away from a cold Northumberland day! 🌞 hope you’ve had a nice one so far. ✨
Hello 👋🏼 I am Mackenzie and write The Lovely Road here on Substack https://mackenziecarose.substack.com/ I have been writing here on this platform for almost a year! I write to share my stories and to be an encouragement and to help others feel less alone on this road of life 🌿
It’s nice to meet you Mackenzie! I just read your post, “there is a season for everything” and it reminded me of a piece I wrote, Spring Always Follows Winter. I loved reading yours and the reminder that nothing is permanent.
Hey Korynn! So lovely to read your page and meet you!! I feel like our paths have crossed a little here... I LOVE your about page! Great energy! Had you considered linking to a couple of your top posts so folks can dive in? I think it’s great to do... Pop in a couple of subscribe links in those posts too if you haven’t already...
Hello all, my name is Karin, I live in Atlanta, GA, and I say "y'all" even though I grew up in Pennsylvania. I live with my cat, Kato, who turned 16 this year! I have been a Substack lurker for a long time, and I could never decide what, if anything, I wanted to write. This summer, I finally jumped in when I realized I've been ignoring my creative needs for my entire adult life. I love reading, watching films, listening to podcasts, playing video games, and talking on and on about all of them. YouTube video essays got me into criticism and theory, but I never wanted to make videos, so Substack has been a great outlet. Here is my "About" page, and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's additions! https://readwatchwrite.substack.com/about
Hi Karin!!! 👋 WOW I LOVE the energy of this - what a perfect permission slip... it’s so great you waited until you were ready... do you read a lot here? I didn’t read much at all for the first 6 months or so... now I have too many to read! 🙉
Haha I'm about the same! I started with one or two, but now that I'm digging around I've subscribed to dozens of great writers. I probably read a handful each day? There's certainly more out there than I can fit, though I try!
I’m Sarah Shotts autistic and nonbinary artist and author based in Northwest Arkansas (USA.) I write about creativity and neurodivergence. https://sarahshotts.substack.com/about

Hi, my name's Jeff. I've been writing on Substack for just over a month, though I was a reader of Anne Helen Petersen's newsletter for a year before that (my first encounter with the platform). I'm from Devon in England originally but now live in Tokyo. I write about literature, the various countries I have lived in, with a bit of memoir thrown into the mix. https://jeffstreeter.substack.com/about
Tokyo - wow - 'Lost in Translation' is one of my favourite ever films! I LOVE memoir - I'll pop over this weekend - thanks for joining the Sparkle membership too Jeffrey!!
Beautiful Claire!! Such a nice idea 🌻 thank you for giving us the opportunity to connect with more amazing writers here. Love love!
I'm Claudia, from Austria but moved to Australia about a decade ago. Here I live now with my partner, our two babies, 14 chickens, 2 guinea pigs and our Labrador bear. (I know, I know .. 😂)
On Substack I write Tales of a Mother. A nourishing hub for mothers and mother creatives on their journey back to self.
We explore topics from emotional healing, what it means to hold ourselves as mothers, my experience as a mother creative, aware parenting, homeschooling and all the other layers of humanness.
All in form of long and short form essays, spoken word poems, online events and a podcast coming soon.
My vision is to nourish each other and support mamas to go after their dreams while making damn delicious art we all get to enjoy ✨
Really looking forward to following your journey. Really keen for your podcast too. I know for me the experience of podcasting has been something I look forward to!
Ahh podcast coming soon yay! I love your accent! I am popping over to read some more of your stuff now because I’m too tired for replies right now I just want some of this ⬆️ ✨✨
Hi everyone, I'm Karen, hanging out on Substack and Medium as Karen Cherry to share all the goodness of Substack with other creatives.
I also publish a serious "for work" newsletter under my 'real' name, Karen Constable. Its niche is food safety, it's 2 years old and is making US$14K which makes me feel like a proud mother duckling (!)
Sydney, Australia is my beloved hometown, where I raised my two beautiful children and where I spend my time working as a self-employed consultant; windsurfing with the best mates anyone could ever wish for and doing volunteer shifts for the NSW bush fire service as a radio dispatcher.
Oh perfect!! Fascinating stuff!! I would love to write more for something else but still love it... I’m not sure how to do that but ideas like this spur me on!!
Hi Karen! Your food safety Substack looks really interesting, I'll check it out some more later. My other life, beyond my creative horsepowered pathfinding endeavors, is as an expert toxicologist specialized in European pesticide regulatory affairs, with a focus on biocontrol at the moment: getting more sustainable environmentally friendly pesticides to farmers. It's a fascinating time to be working in agriculture in Europe right now! 🙂
We do indeed! 🙂 seeing you writing about food safety, I'm kind of tempted... But it's also my current "day job" so I'm not sure that I have the motivation to do that during my leisure time
Update: My paid newsletter is now at $17K, hooray! I love seeing these older comments as it reminds me how far I have come. Growth was slower than I wanted in December and January but picking up pace again.

I'm Tamzin, I'm Irish and I'm a visual artist, writer and mentor. I've lived in Italy, central Africa, all over but I'm currently based in Austria -- not for much longer though!
I came to Substack to write the stories of phenomenal women alongside "Soul Signs" the portraits I do of their powerful and magical energy. Sometimes those stories deal with very tough subjects, but I truly believe that if we hold space for someone and truly listen to them, we can all relate no matter where they're from and so much healing can occur ❤️
I'm creating a space for those deep connections to be formed, and I'm here to celebrate women and to show them the light shining out of them, even if we can't always see it for ourselves 🌟
It's really beautiful, I cycle a lot through the mountains and lakes and the views are breathtaking. But overall, it's not my home, and I'm so ready to find my home... I don't think I can add photos here of the landscape but I sometimes do on Notes and I will more :)
Wow, I love your artwork! I also believe when we hold space for another to share their story, deep healing for all occurs. One of my greatest passions is to help others who live with chronic illness find their voice - for this very reason.
Tamzin - your work is beautiful. I visited your page and relate so much to absorbing other’s energy. In fact, I think you just helped me figure out why I’m so tense and stressed all the time! Thank you! Can’t wait to see more and get to know you.
Thank you so much Brenda, seeing this comment was so lovely. Helping people to untangle what energy belongs to them and what doesn't is a big part of my work - so glad if you've already figured something out and let go of some of that tension and stress! I also look forward to getting to know you more.
I haven't named one since we lost Hairy Bob - a silkie - I loved her so so much... she had a tragic end... these are all just called princess - there is a black roack, 2 big white princesses and 3 black bantams... https://www.youtube.com/shorts/cOSk8c_LUWU

I am Clare and found Substack after deciding to take a break from Instagram, realising that many other creatives had done the same. I live in the South West, UK, spending my time between Dorset and Cornwall, where my surroundings, nature, wildlife and the seasons inspire my art. I am a self-taught watercolour artist with the desire to share the beauty of the natural world with others. As well as writing on Substack, I have my own website and blog, titled The Pondering of an Artist, and I recently started my own YouTube channel. In sharing my artwork and pondering, I hope to lift people’s spirits and bring some joy. It’s early days but I am really enjoying myself, being able to create art, but also share my creativity through writing, photography and video. You can find me at https://www.purpleladybirdart.co.uk/
My tagline is - ‘Stay Naturally Curious’, as that is what I am and hope to inspire others. 💜🙏
Hi everyone, I’m Louise a neurodivergent therapist, based in the UK, who’s just joined Substack. I was already writing micro(ish) blogs on Facebook, but wanted to find a home that felt more comfortable and where I could write longer pieces.
I mostly write about the things I find helpful in my quest to curate a life that is right for me as a late diagnosed autistic. It’s a lot of self-compassion and unlearning of old unhelpful thoughts (with a good helping of my special interests).
I’m looking forward to connecting with others here.

I am a newbie here 😊. So glad to be here.
I am in awe of all the support that is available in this space. Claire you are great I look forward to joining your corner of Substack.
I’ve been writing on Substack for roughly 2weeks now.
I journeyed here from the social media world.
I decided to put an end to forcing something that didn’t feel in alignment and lean more into what comes more natural to me.
That is writing ( in a sense that writing has always served as a feel good tool of expression). I have given myself permission to gain skills and grow as a “writer” along the way.
What I do?

Love this: I decided to put an end to forcing something that didn’t feel in alignment and lean more into what comes more natural to me.
This is what I am trying to help people do. :o)
Great, what you are trying to do is needed in this world !
Nice meeting you
Navasia I would love to connect with you 🌟
Yes! I would love to ..Let's make it happen 😊
Ciao Claire,
It’s funny how you jus stumble across peoples words sometimes, and hold that deck for a while.....see what cards play out,
Hang in the garden, and see what feeds you. That happened here.
I’m a rose,
by many other names...
I’m from the land of Oz,
But my heart lives in Spain.
I allow the ink to run ever so gently, until my wobbly hands can hold the pen again with some grip.
I’m writing more in responses,...connecting that way,
never following any tips on how to use the platform,.....jus noticing it all roll by.....see how it changes over such short periods of time.
I enjoy the sweet fumble along the way.
I see all you do and give.
I appreciate what you are putting out to us all.
Gracious 🙏🏾
How beautiful Rose - Substack is so so expansive - it has space for all of who we are - glad you're here on Sparkle with us... ✨
The sweet fumble along the way, sounds like a metaphor for life! Lovely :)

Hi Louise! Also late (as yet undiagnosed) neurodivergent! I’ll pop over and have a look at your words this weekend!! ✨💡
Self identification is very much valid!
You’re so right there!!
