I hope you are having a nice day so far? I’m back from London and writing to you from a very sunny living room this morning. This has been the BEST summer we’ve seen in Northumberland in nine years of living here. Every day I do a teeny bit of gardening and have coffee in the sun - beautiful!
Southenerns can tend to think I’ve come a long way when I arrive with my Northern accent in London but it’s only 3.5hours on a train from mine. I love ‘popping down’ to the big smoke. It feels like I’m in a film set.
I love the endless possibility, the red phone boxes and pockets of greenery. I usually make the train a mobile office but I was craving a break. So this time it was chats about life, work and everything in between with
and I read Breaking Waves by on the way back - heartbreakingly beautiful and so soul stirring. A real triumph Emma!🌳
Spontaneity
I had a whirlwind 24hours with my pals at the Summer Garden Party. We all felt so celebrated and so taken care of. It was a real moment.
I adored hearing
and Hamish speak about the essence and triumphs of Substack. (There are now 5million paying subscribers and 50million readers).I also loved having a hug with
and and meeting her husband who is also an incredible writer by the way. Read more.My favourite part was just being in the environment, being in the energy of over one hundred (?) writers writing on Substack. All about different things, all with some of the struggles we all feel, all celebrating what a WONDERFUL platform for community it is here.
On mass, I didn’t recognise many people really but on a cellular level, I know what a wonderful journey they have each been on.
So yes, we’re inside this world online…
We read words and build up a picture and a connection to someone. Then we break the fourth wall and meet them in person and it’s the same but different isn’t it. It’s super special. I find people are even more likeable in person… we drop our guard I think that’s why.
I will ALWAYS fly the flag for engagement. When my publications were busy I didn’t know how I would physically process more tags, comments, people. Once my nervous system got used to it, I realised it’s all beautiful, every single syllable of a word someone types to me. I always have an option on how to deepen the connection in response.

Connection deepens in beautiful ways the longer you spend with someone and I’ve come to learn online can be that too. That’s why I’m writing a book about it this year.
