My boiler plate changes each time but I always mention where I live... I often mention our pet chickens too - personal details for connection from where you are to where I am in the world... 🌍
Thank you, Claire -- I've re-written my bio and one line description of my Substack -- less repitition between the two and hopefully a bit less stiff :) https://substack.com/@janelisabeth
My boiler plate (newly written):
Hello friends, familiar and new. You are so welcome here. I’m Jan. I live in France in a house that we are slowly renovating and hold spaces for those on journeys of transformation — creatives, writers, and those seeking well-being, rest and hope in our fragile world. I believe story is powerful and that the earth offers us healing through our daily connection and herbal allies. Let’s create a little alchemy together.
I really really like it. You can say so much in only one language, wow! I have half the characters as I write in 2 languages. Sorry for the genuine surprise, I am not used to see so much info in those spaces anymore haha x
Thank you Claire! I've rewritten my one line description and have updated my pinned post, where I refer to my about page. I'm not sure if I should combine the two or leave them as they are.
Haha - the balloon thing was just to get you thinking outside the box... sorry for any confusion there! It's really personal preference when it comes to Hero Posts/ pinned posts and about pages - see the example I've given and mine and see what feels good to you? Both convert readers into subscribers. ✨
Hi Amy, Your boiler plate drew me in with "emptying nest". I also write toward the empty-nester and am always looking to make connections with others in this interesting and exciting stage of life! I just subscribed. (And also wondering what a balloon is. Just the emoji? 🎈?)
Hi Amy - I really love your bio description and your Welcome post. I'm fairly new to Substack, but many years managing and designing websites taught me that it is always useful to have information in multiple places, as different people search differently (ie some people will go to the Welcome post and some will go to the About page)!
Super helpful post, Claire! I've been sitting in a café working through my bio and boiler plate and this is what I've come up with so far...
bio:
Former corporate girlie turned nomad and creative entrepreneur.
Writer, astrologer, lover of cyclical living and reclaiming our truest nature.
🇨🇦🇹🇭 Canadian expat living in Thailand with my dog, Lady.
boiler plate:
Hi, I’m Kaitlyn 👋 I write about real life through the lens of astrology. My goal is to help as many people as possible learn to love themselves for who they are—dark parts and all. I believe the parts we were taught to hide are where our true gifts lie.
My focus is to inspire you to feel confident enough to shine without the fear and expectations of others.
Currently writing from my favourite air conditioned café in Pai, Thailand to beat the summer heat🔥 (this last line will change each time based on where I'm actually located).
I like the idea of adding that connection of where in the world I am, since it does change often.
My bio: Semi-retired SLP, blogger and author. Finding joy in the empty-nest years through faith, family, reading, cycling, travel, cabin life, and being "Lala" to my grands.
My boiler plate: Where empty-nesters find joy, through faith and hope, in life's next chapter; from a mom who's fledged four younglings and (mostly) held it together. Here to guide you on your empty-nest joyride!
I'd love your feedback! Question: Do I need to spell out SLP- Speech-Language Pathologist? It takes up so many characters, and really has little to do with my Substack, but just lets others know a little more about me. But is "SLP" a mystery?
I've just discovered your page and as I'm only starting out on Substack, it is really helpful. Looking forward to a proper read with a cuppa over the weekend.
So I'm a few months behind here, but still slowly doing the work!
My bio is; Writer, wild swimmer, carer and novice nature noticer, searching for the wild wonder of the everyday. Fascinated by the sea, stories and the words that build them. Trying to make space for the quiet, creative things, big and small. 🌊
My (newly written and as yet un-sent out!) boiler plate is: Hi, I’m Bonnie. I live on the border of London and Kent, and spend my snatched time writing, seeking the magical within the seemingly mundane, searching for old stories and new knowledge about everything around me. I want to share my wonder with you as I explore. Thanks for joining me! 🌊
I feel a bit squeamish about the boiler plate, I'm not sure why?!
Great Zan - can you see how you've repeated the phase - you want a unique writer bio and a a separate publication description... `is it a wellness publication?

Boiler plate
Hey there, I’m Laura. I live in Adelaide, Australia. I’m a researcher, economic advisor and yoga teacher. In my weekly newsletter, Between a Rock and a Hard Pose I write on lessons and experiences from yoga and rock climbing. Paid readers also receive a monthly online yoga class.
Ok just checking on that as it sounded like it was the name of your book and your Substack... yes maybe invite folks in a little more too - what can they expect to find? x

I love this, Jan! It really drew me in and it felt like words from a dear friend, even though I don't know you yet.
Thank you so much Kaitlyn x

Nice to meet you! I just followed you back. It is an interesting and exciting stage of life!
Thanks so much! Nice to meet you too!
I have the same question :D
I like your bio <3

Love this. - I wonder if you open with Reclaiming our Truest Nature?
Oh I like this suggestion, Claire! Thank you for your input.

I think it's ok Linda - people could google it and it sounds like it's not the most important part of your Substack?
Thanks, Claire!
I've just discovered your page and as I'm only starting out on Substack, it is really helpful. Looking forward to a proper read with a cuppa over the weekend.
Aw welcome Sam - do let me know what you need as you navigate around.
You describe these things so brilliantly and easily accessible - a real sparkling star 🌟
Thanks Elin! ✨ 🤓

I feel a bit squeamish about the boiler plate, I'm not sure why?!
Is it the re introduction? You don’t have to put it on everytime?
Maybe? I think it’s also the sense that by introducing myself I am somehow talking directly to people who don’t know me, rather than those that do….
NEVER put your picture out there. Unless you look like Claire : )
Haha - Richard I hope you would put a picture up! People love to see people.
I have a disk jockey friend. When I asked if he wanted to work in TV he said, "I have a face made for radio."
Ha so mean!
This is a really helpful bio... I've been working on mine and got to this on my hero post:
"On a mission 1.5 million people on my journey to think with clarity, act with intention, and live with vitality. Be one of them."
But I'll be taking a few tips from this post to refine it!
Great Zan - can you see how you've repeated the phase - you want a unique writer bio and a a separate publication description... `is it a wellness publication?
Ah yes I have repeated them... maybe I'll work to make my personal bio more... personal lol. That's a really great tip.
It's semi-wellness, but also more "thinky" like Shane Parrish/Morgan Housel - so yes living well but also thinking frameworks around that
Ok yes give us more about you and about that intent - less mystery more clarity!
Thank you! I will give this a go. Mm characters restrictions is a problem for me that I want to communicate in both languages there too. Mmm 🤔
Could you use the emoji flags. One line for one language, one line for the second?
I tried!
Does anyone have a suggestion to make it shorter? It's more than 250characters I am afraid 🥲
"🇮🇹 Mente attiva e creativa, uso le mie lauree in modo alternativo. Scrivo in 2 lingue e aiuto le persone nel loro viaggio verso crescita personale
🇬🇧 Active and creative mind, making an alternative use of my degrees. I write in 2 languages and help people in their journey to personal development"
This shaves off 10 characters:
Using my active & creative mind to make use of my degrees. I write in 2 languages to help people in their journey of personal development
Thanks! I also used I help you instead of I help people, still a few characters over. Doing my best haha
🇮🇹Sfrutto la mia mente creativa per usare le mie 4 lauree. Uso 2 lingue per aiutarti nel tuo viaggio di crescita personale
🇬🇧Applying my creative mind to make use of my 4 degrees. I use 2 languages to help you in your journey of personal development
This seems to be working YAYYYY thanks! x
❤️❤️🥰
I think this is 239 characters including the flags -- it occrurred to me that we can see the two languages so doesn't need to be said --
🇮🇹 Mente attiva e creativa, uso le mie lauree in modo alternativo. Aiuto le persone nel loro viaggio verso crescita personale
🇬🇧 Using my active & creative mind to make use of my degrees, I help people on their journey of personal development.
omg you are so right lol

Do you have a book out? I would swap the lines around but also I honestly don’t think you need to repeat your publication title in your writer bio…
No I don’t, maybe one day…great thanks, I’ll move it altogether.
