Introduction of our compassionate friend swap thread for Summer!
Hi Sparklers,
Hope your view of Sunday is beautiful.
You might have heard this story before but I’m super passionate about telling it.
In April 2023, a year after arriving here, I decided to go ‘all in’ with Substack.
I knew growth was possible but my plan was always about depth of connection and to grow my business.
I set out to write four times a month, add in an 11 minute voice note and to collaborate monthly.
I was off all other social media and as Notes was introduced my Substack grew exponentially. My mailing list had always sat around 300 subs - you can see when I imported it on the graph below. Now I was growing, (and still am) ave 60-100 subs every single month depending on the activity over on .
It was easy to track new subscribers coming directly from guest posts and from Notes in my dashboard but that was only step one.
I then focussed in on ‘depth’ - depth of connection, depth of engagement, depth of understanding. This is (and I promise you) the missing mindset piece for your Substack. ✨
My classes focusses on growing your Substack (mailing list) and more joyfully and sustainably. We have an opportunity to deepen our connection with our subscribers every time we write - come to class tomorrow to learn how.
Back in June 2023, I separated out my Substack education into a space of it’s own as I was flooded with people who I knew in my heart were only there on my first publication for my Get Creative on Substack posts. I’ve stripped those out and now that publication space is a home dear to my heart - I have creative freedom there.
Being creative and growing sustainably on Substack isn’t ALL I’m about and it would have tipped the balance to show up congruently if I kept growing writing posts about Substack there.
✨ 😳
It would be like opening a copy of Country Living Magazine and finding Tech Insider Magazine inside the cover - I didn’t want to create a tangled, confusing mess! Clarity is really important to me.
Celebrating you - the magazine of you!
I celebrate wholehearted business and slow family life and this underpins all of my work both here and outside of this platform - I needed a clear brand away from to hold space for Substack. ✨
I know some of you play with publishing Substack growth posts, with funnelling folks in to get to know you through exploring the common message of what Substack means to us. Perhaps this is a way to help your dream readers find you, perhaps people with subscribe and unsubscribe when you publish something else, perhaps people will share it and bring you lot’s more subscribers.
There’s nothing wrong in talking about Substack on Substack but you’ve got to hold people in a whole. Why is it important to you? We have to consider this here because subscribers can be fickle and there’s a huge trend of people jumping in then out again (both free and paid) 😅
Show your readers what you’re about, show them your real why, think twice before you’re tempted to chase the temporary peaks…
Curate your Substack magazine so your readers want to open every new article. Heck, they might even delve into the archives…
On the flip side, unsubscribes are part of it all, check your subscriber retention rate and let me know how it’s looking in the comments?
Looking forward to seeing you at class tomorrow.
Claire
