Thanks Claire. In some ways it's making it harder to 'game' the system (esp with recommendations) and so we can just focus on the things that make this space special - writing from the heart and building meaningful connections.
I hear you Lee - recommendations were the heart of my growth and so it's just going to take some time to re-adjust the cogs... they also exist in the kit network and have been such a wonderful growth tool for many of the people we see with 10s of thousands of subscribers too - maybe they'll revert maybe they won't but in the meantime I have lots of experiments going on off platform to help if people don't want to hammer Notes all the time and want new people in different ways and ways that suit their way of showing up - it will all be fine. xx
Such useful advice Claire, thank you. I’ve never been one to chase growth, I write what lights me up and trust that it will light up my readers too. Even if recommendations get no traction at all, I’ll still keep recommending people whose work I love because it’s good energy - and we need to spread more of that!!
So all the reccomendations that people blogged and vlogged abour are now wasted energy for them and confusion for us who try to figure out how this works.
I don't see it as a waste as it's the art of reciprocity but if you're asking if they bring growth - no hardly at all now. Maybe they'll change it back I don't know...
What do you think happened to recommendations exactly, Claire? They were my biggest driver for new subs and felt like such a lovely way to lift up other creators we admire.
It feels like the sign up flow changed since I was a few from a lots of people and getting tonnes from some of my clients and pals who have bigger online audiences elsewhere when they were signing up for their substack. I just don’t get any now really.
